What We Do

About Second Site

Second Site would not be possible without the work and process developed by Living Room Playmakers, who created new work in unusual spaces. We are first and foremost a writer-driven collective devoted to creating new work in new spaces, often in collaboration with communities connected to them. While we primarily work with theatre-makers, we are not a theatre company. We strive to make work that allows a more active role for audience members in the way they experience our productions.

Mission Statement

We are a collective of storytellers who create new work for, and are inspired by, non-traditional spaces both physical and virtual.  We create work in the spirit of community and collaboration, while also honoring each writer’s individual voice.

Core Values

Artists Over Infrastructure

We commit to devoting our resources first and foremost to compensating artists. For this reason, we create in locations with minimal or no rental fees and inherently theatrical spaces to minimize design costs.

Accessibility

We are devoted to making our work economically accessible, and creating in spaces that accommodate the abilities of all artists and audience members. We will communicate this clearly in our marketing and continually educate ourselves in accessibility.

Community

We foster open dialogue and make decisions democratically in our collective. We will partner with communities associated with performance spaces, and prioritize their needs in selecting leadership and artists for projects.

Fluidity

We believe fluidity is essential to creativity, and we embrace this in every aspect of our collective. We commit to a flexible leadership model that can adapt to each project and community's needs, allowing for necessary changes.

Inclusivity

We commit to creating an environment where artists can work free of discrimination or harassment based on race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, background, ability, family status, or any other part of an artist’s identity.

We commit to learning and growing to best support all of the artists we work with and keep ourselves accountable in the process.
